Summer Gambling Slumber

4 replies • Last post

Ahh, it is summer. The weather in Michigan has finally gotten to the point where the temperature reaches 80 degrees regularly and the local baseball team is beginning its annual collapse in the standings. It is funny, when I was a kid I never wanted to be outside in the heat. Don't get me wrong, I love being outdoors, but HATE being overly hot. Now that I am older I see myself wanting to be outside even if I don't have any particular reason to be there (sitting in a chair drinking beer is just dandy with me). It is recently though that I noticed a particular drop in my online casino game play compared to when the weather was colder.

I call this my Summer Gambling Slumber and I am here today to type out my feelings on it.

I consider myself to be a blackjack fanatic. I love to see all the combinations and want to see how long before I deviate from the basic strategy and how things go once I am off track. During the fall and winter I could be found playing online for several hours per week, even entering multiple tournaments during that same period for something to do. This also applies to other games that I normally don't touch that often like Poker or oddball variants of games that I do like. Recently though I had noticed that it had been a couple of weeks since I had logged on to play, and longer since I had even entered a tournament. Where had this time gone? What had I been up to?

Well, I had spent some time mowing grass, playing with my kids and staring at the neighbors that I don't like (thinking of ways to be mean to them...stink bombs are on the way in the mail). While I had been doing all of this, I rarely even thought about the prospect of playing casino games. It was strange but good at the same time. It is not that I think about gambling all the time or anything, but just interesting that I was able to forget about one of my new hobbies so easily once the sun started shining.

Don't get me wrong; I have still been up to wager while the warmer weather has been around. It just seems that the primary gambling target has changed from table games to sports betting. Since my initial excursion into NHL betting (see my past blog on that), I have found myself getting more into wagering on games as a way to keep me watching. I enjoy the various bets in baseball such as: straight up win, over under for runs, who will score first, and will there be a run scored in the first inning. I really have become a big fan of this, but wonder if my attention will wander back to table games once the colder weather comes around in about three months.

How about you in CL land? Do you find yourself gambling less online when the weather is good out? What are your favorite activities in the summer weather?

Hi Barbados,

I enjoyed the blog posting and how you contrast not only the seasons, but also your gambling moods and preferences. Interesting stuff! 🙂

I'm a big fan of many American sports. I grew up in the US in the Boston area, so the last decade has been very kind when it comes to the big four!

Although I'm not much of a gambling guy, I can see where you're coming from when you speak of a summer slumber from an American pro sport spectator perspective. In my opinion, the summer is a down period in sports because there's just less going on. There's only baseball and we're really only counting the days to the start of the NFL season in September, the beggining of the NHL season in October and for the NBA to kick off in November. Sometimes other events like the World Cup or major events in Tennis or Golf can make up for the lack of activity, but that only tides one over for so long!

With less to bet on it's normal to spend less time gambling, no?

True, there is less to gamble on right now sports wise, but I just don't feel that bug to be inside at my computer playing blackjack or anything like that.

This fall I will be making my American football wagering debut, and as I am already a huge fan I can imagine how intense it will make things for me.

I also have taken to making wagers with my friends. I just bet that Jaromir Jagr (NHL Hockey) will not score 30 goals with his new team the Philadelphia Flyers. My friend is a huge fan of his and we are wagering a hockey jersey of our choosing when I win. 🙂

Re: betting on football. I've toyed with that and Fantasy Football a bit in the past, and I've found that it transforms the experience of watching the sport completely. I was not a big fan of the change, but many are. I suppose you'll see for yourself!

By the way, that jersey is in the bag because I don't see Jagr coming close to 30 goals. Any idea about which jersey it's going to be?

a nice and original correlation between summer and gambling, I think that is so true that when the weather is good we can do so many other things that we do not have time left for gambling
