Spamalot (Or, If I haven't Responded To Your Offer For A 500% Deposit Bonus In Over A Month, I'm Probably Not Interested)

28. That is the number of email messages I have gotten in the past three weeks from an online casino that is offering me match bonuses and asking why I haven't been back to their casino lately, and frankly it is starting to agitate me. I keep seeing my inbox filled with casinos that are marketing me with spam. Some are casinos that I have played in the past although I have noticed others that I do not recognize having played with in the past (although my memory could be fogged by one or two beverages from Arthur Guinness).

My frustration with this practice is compounded by the fact that I have a smartphone which blinks a light at me every time I get an email. Hence when I get a message from a casino and my phone starts blinking, the battery is being used which diminishes the life of my phone outside of the charger. I can deal with that once in a while, but when I get that multiple times a day from the same casino I start getting really agitated.

Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking the weekly messages that a lot of casinos send to players. These are great because they tell you what games are new, what is hot and any cool contests or comp bonuses are being featured at that casino. I am cool with those.

But when you are hyping a 500% match bonus multiple times per day/week/month, you may as well be a Nubian princess trying to sell me generic Viagra while getting me to cash a Western Union Moneygram for $100,000 USD. Point being, to me you lose all legitimacy.

As I have stated before I attended college for advertising and marketing. I have work experience in the field and understand a lot about what marketing is: A numbers game. Marketing and advertising people need to generate maximum bang for their buck when it comes to getting their message out, and mass marketed emails are a very cheap way for them to hit a lot of people. However, the factor that these companies do not take into account is the fact that spam often times backfires and steers people away from their casino.

People don't have the time nowadays to deal with these nuisances. My time is more and more constrained every day, and messages like these a big PITA. After a twelve hour shift at work the last thing I want to have happen is come out to my phone three quarters drained from this garbage. I really despise this type of marketing, and I wonder how effective this type of advertising is. I mean it must generate some results, even if it does ruin and credibility the casino has tried to build up.

What do you guys think? Are you being inundated by spam emails from casinos? What are opinions on them, do they bug you as much as they bug me or do you find them to be a necessary evil of the industry? If you could send out a message to the casinos about their messages, what would it be? (I am so demanding of my blog reading audience aren't I 😉 ).
