Weekend in Detroit

10 replies • Last post

This weekend I had the pleasure of going down to Detroit as my daughter had a cheerleading competition there. My disdain for these competitions along with a fee of $20 per day to watch her compete led me to having my wife go in and watch her while I roamed the town. I managed to hit the three casinos in town (MGM Grand, Motor City, and Greektown) and thought I'd post some thoughts.

The MGM Grand is really quite slick. Unlike the Greektown Casino, the parking at MGM and Motor City is free, so if you're looking to stay and play or are hitting up a Red Wings, Tigers, or Lions game you can park there and catch a shuttle. This made the MGM my first stop, and I spent a few hours inside, checking out the variety of slots on offer. I really like the look and feel of the newer games being put out, as developers are throwing out touch displays along with curved 42 inch LED HD displays, which really make the games pop. Some of the cool games I saw here were The Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, Gremlins, and The Flintstones, each of which had a ton of features. I remembered to snap a couple of pictures there for you to see the BBT and Game of Thrones games.

The Motor City Casino is nice too, and they have a lot of the same games as MGM Grand, but I was able to spot more table games there. I didn't stay as long here, but I would be more open to if I had more time.

After catching dinner with my wife and daughter (and their entire cheer team), I ended up walking across the street to the Greektown Casino. Now, I have been here a bunch of times in the past, but I have to say this casino has become a dump. You can clearly tell the huge difference between this and the other two properties. I ended up taking a quick stroll around and left as I didn't see any compelling reason to stay.

All in all, it looks like the casinos in Detroit are pretty strong. There were a LOT of people at all of the casinos, and a lot of play was going down. I didn't bring my passport so I was unable to hop over to Canada to check out Caesars Windsor, but the other spots had a lot going on.

Here are the pics.

Oh, I also wanted to give a shout out to the Bedazzled slot. They made this game with a 3D screen like the Nintendo 3DS, along with a rumbling seat and some really intense speakers. I pumped a few bucks into it and found it to be a lot of fun.

Nice one slim, thanks for posting your experience.

Am I right in thinking that the Game of Thrones land slot is different to the Microgaming version? I hope so because the online one sucks!

How did the cheerleading comp go?

Those are some fancy machines. All the bells and whistles.

It's fun going to different casinos. I usually end up doing that when I am with one specific friend on a girl's weekend or summer trip, because she likes to try the casinos wherever we go. Last time we tried casinos in the Wisconsin Dells. I haven't been to any land casino for a while,

Thanks for the reviews and pics!

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of the things, and no good thing ever dies.

Yeah that Game of Thrones slot is by Aristocrat actually, and it looks way better than the Microgaming one for sure.

The cheer comp didn't end up how they wanted, as they finished fourth, which means they don't need to go to Florida to compete (yay, as we are going to Florida two weeks after that competition).

Ah, you had a pleasant time there. It has been a long time since my last visit to land casino where I mostly played Roulette and Blackjack. And now, if I find some fancy slots like the one in the picture, I would definitely try those.

Good Day.

I though they will go bankrupt due to slowing economy. If they MGM and The motor way able to upgrade their list of roosters game then then are still very profitable. In the case of Greektown from the sound of it business is not doing very well.

Greektown is definitely the least profitable of the casinos in Detroit, but with Dan Gilbert purchasing it and changing the brand to go with his Ohio casinos, it looks like they may be able to turn things around.

They are trying to get an MLS franchise to Detroit, which would be right by the Greektown Casino, so hopefully, that'd send a little more traffic to that casino.

This looks so exciting! Pity that land casinos in my city look much worse and they don't even have Aristocrat games. Would like to finally try the Walking Dead by Aristocrat. But this is really fancy Smile

Well if that's the case of Greektown we have to wait and see. If the new owner can transform that old casino into a modern casino it would be good. And people in would want to play new kinds of machines as well as having a good theme of the casino.
