Why Do You Gamble?

34 replies • Last post

Hi Members,

Research says there is three basic reasons why a person gambles: Escape, Excitement or Finances.

I would like to believe that most gamblers play for the excitement. We all know the thrill that gambling brings to us. Hit a bonus round and it is a high better than any drug you can take! Land a nice win on the reels and we are jumping up and down with excitement.

There are those who play to escape. This type of gambler has personal problems or are unhappy and gambling makes them forget their problems. Time flies when we gamble. What seem’s like 30 minutes has passed, actually has been 2 hours. While we play we are thinking about nothing else. In fact for some it is the only time they feel any real excitement in their lives.

Then there is the gambler who plays for finances. Players who want to get rich quick. Players who play hoping to pocket some money and throw it in the bank. Highrollers who already have a healthy bankroll want to take the gamble and double it. Some players have financial difficulites and hope that if they play, the big one will hit and all their financial woes will be over.

Why do you gamble?

Definitely for excitement! I just love the bitter-sweet anticipation of gambling, and the thrilling charms of winning! Of course, financial reasons are partly there, and I think every gambler has secondary financial reasons for playing. And why not - if we win a massive jackpot, it's a great bonus to the excitement we had playing!

I never considered playing in an online casinos as gambling. For me it was a part time, then full time job, back in my bonus whoring days. That made me some nice profits Money

Those days are long over now ( for me anyway ), got myself into some new waters and frankly dont have time nor desire to do it anymore.

Nowadays I barely play, but when I do it is gambling and I cant say I enjoy it too much ( except for when I play online poker )

But I love playing BJ at land based casinos. On my last vaca in South Africa, I have visited couple of brick and mortar casinos and really enjoyed myself.

Play Safe!

1)Excitement - love the rush..its like a drug
2)Escape - love to dream of the big win and what I'd do with the winnings...

I started like zuga - mixing fun and profit by collecting bonuses. But once you do that long enough you run out of new casinos and good bonuses to play! Wink

So now its just about having a bit of fun every now and then, and of course checking out new games and casinos for reviews.

I do like to play poker for the sheer ecstasy of the game! I have never really played for financial reasons to get ahead. I think by the time you get done you would have more financial woes than when you started!

I like poker too but don't really think of it as gambling like playing at a casino. Its mentally challenging, fun and social. I like beating people, the money is incidental (and I only play small stakes anyway). How often do you outplay someone, fool them into going all in with a losing hand ... and then they get lucky and win? Its annoying when that happens but also satisfying in a sick and twisted kind of way!

Speaking only for myself, I strongly identify with the reasons already stated.
However, I must not underplay what I know to be the strongest pull that "gambling" ( or for that matter, just being inside a casino ) has on me. It's something that I think is best described as "My Hiding Place", which I believe most everyone needs (requires), at least once in awhile.
For one thing, casinos are always open, so there's no pressure of having to worry about getting there at any particular time. It's there when I'm ready. . Also, the casino employees (most usually) treat you the way you would like to be treated by everyone. On top of that, you are provided with the therapeutic (seriously) effects of not being called to the telephone or expected to (Once Again) perform another task above and beyond what you're already completely overwhelmed with doing.
It would be a major challenge to find anything else that, at a moment's notice, (if you live nearby) can afford all of these advantages.
Thanks for your interest in my opinion. That makes me feel wonderfully optimistic.
HAPPY "GAMBLING" !

Thanks for the great post rainbow23. I'm guessing a few casino owners would love to hear that too! There is a lot of science that is behind the way casinos are designed and its for that very reason - don't disturb the players with outside stresses and worries. Ever noticed there are very few clocks on the walls in casinos?

Rainbow that is sooooooooo true. The world escapes you like setting out to sail on the sea! It's just you and your game. You don't need anyone to go with you, you don't think about anything else but have a good time. Not to mention how times flies!

I love the excitement! It's definitely a high. I have to say I enjoy the land based casinos much more than gambling online. All the added effects of lights and ding dings. Oh and the people watching is so much fun.

People wearing gloves and masks. I can get lost in observing someone tapping on their screen as if it will trigger a bonus round or big win. You could spend a nice chunk of change on a night out. As for me, I'd rather take it to the casino.

Yes people watching can be as entertaining as gambling at the land casino. But i do enjoy being in my jammies, having a nice cup of coffee and spinning in my living room. No traffic, no fighting over a machine and no paper jam in the machine!

I used to wonder years ago why online casinos didn't have live text chat to make them more social - just like a real casino. And finally they have started to do it. But how long until they bring in voice chat?

I wonder how many players actually chit chat while they are playing. Probably the same players that chit chat at land based casinos. I am not much of a chatter box at land based casinos so i am not too sure i would get into the chat while i spin online.

I wonder if you can hang around chat while your not spinning. I would think this would promote beggars like you see at some poker sites.

Hmm it might - but then again most casinos don't allow p2p funds transfers like the poker sites do so it shouldn't be a problem.

I gamble for a simple reason - because I enjoy it! I have won plenty and lost plenty but I can tell you one thing, I never lost a penny that I couldn't afford to lose.

One of my favourite bets is one against my football team (my user name) so that way if they win I am happy and if they don't I win some money. Either way I win!

Hi Everyone,
I would have to say that I gamble for the escape. Sometimes, I have so darn my to do in RL and even online, and I want to go online and just "do nothing," escape, and immerse myself into the fun of the games. Sometimes, I get bored with it, then I just switch up the games or play a little poker. The excitement would follow if I ever learn how to get a luckier and win more! lol! Keeping to lower stakes helps me enjoy and for it not to become one more stressor in life.
Cheers!!Smile

As far as chat goes...I sometimes chat during poker games (on poker only sites), but I find that some are friendlier than others. Depends upon the stakes of the game whether or not people want to chat a bit and some can become quite rude, spoiling the mood for everyone. So, chat depends.

I feel the same way hope with poker. Sometimes playing at a table can be a blast chatting with other players. Sometimes it is serious business with little to no chatting at all.

Over all i think when the table is friendly it makes the game that much more fun to play.

Hi Usne!
I go on a free poker site (where you can win poker points and small cash prizes) and there are some friendly people there and some really immature. Easy to hide behind a screen name and act like an idiot, right? lol.
What I really enjoy is asking where everyone is from, knowing I am playing poker with people from all over the country and even the world. Can be interesting.
Have a wonderful day, everyone! Smile

I would like a chat line while playing online. There would be instant anwers to questions I might have that I don't want to ask the workers at the casino.

I enjoy gambling because i clear my mind of anything going on around me.....Thats why i like doing it in my home..The casino by my house always has drama like people stripping and urinating in the loby that is the stuff i can do without.Don't get me wrong it does bring some excitment but i can do without all that.

Ewwww...that casino makes the one I visit sound like a palace! Smile I do love even the hotel experience. Leaving BOTH my computers and the phone behind. Not worrying about time. Going up to take a nap when I want and cable TV! lol I will go for a swim or sit in the hot tub if I need a break. Down time with a book or magazine. That is why Iove staying a couple of nights and also so I don't have to run around and play all my favorite machines in just a few hours. I always panic when it is time to go home...or overstay my welcome. I don't think I will even bother going anymore unless I can spend a night or two. It is also SO nice to gamble at like 2 or 3 in the morning when the band is done playing and fewer people are on the floor. Yes, I am overdue for a visit. Smile

I love it too when the people clear out late at night. Oh it's so nice to have your pick of machines and not have someone breathing over you. I'm suddenly feeling like a visit too.

dinklee that is gross... the urinating, not the stripping. Hmm well depends on who is stripping I guess lol

You know how the carpets at casinos are usually so crazy? There are lots of theories ... keep the players looking up at the games, mesmerise them with the patterns etc, but the one that makes most sense is so that you can't see the stains so easily...
