Who is Lady Luck Anyway?

2 replies • Last post

We owe all our good fortune to Lady Luck, but who the heck is she anyway? The coined phrase derives from Fortuna, the Roman goddess of luck and fortune in Roman religion. Whether we set out in our finest threads for a night on the town in the razzle dazzle of Las Vegas or play in the comfort of our homes, we all want Lady Luck at our side.

Gentlemen playing craps with a stroke of good fortune spot a beautiful damsel standing next to him and she symbolizes Lady Luck. He slips her a stack of chips to stay at his side, for it is she that his cup runneth over. Walk through any casino and take a look at the highroller who believes in Lady Luck. He is easy to spot, he is the one with the lovely woman on his arm. She’s not on his arm for show, she is on his arm for LUCK!

But did you know that Lady Luck like Fortuna can bring bad luck as well? I guess some real believers do. Watch how quickly her arm tucked in his is tossed off when the chips are down. Remember the female standing at the craps table who was slipped a a stack of chips to stay? Seems his luck has just turned sour as he hands her a black chip to leave!

Lady Luck is infamous for having unladylike ways too. She is funny that way and very unpredictable. True to her gender she always makes us wonder what it takes to win her over. We can’t resist her charms as time and time again the gambler calls on her. We respect her and always credit her when we win. We politely ask her to leave when we are not winning or wonder where she has run off to now, when the the streak of bad luck seems to never end.

What does it take for Lady Luck to possess her good fortune on us? I guess we will never know. That’s the mystery and the seduction in this female goddess that we may never unravel.

Yeah, being a lady luck is very unpredictable. She is very fortunate upon winning in every game.

Awwww, so well put and poetic! But I guess it's true - we always seem to wonder why she's left us when we're losing, or where she came from, when she jumps at us unpredictably, leaving us shocked at the sum we've just won. In either case, she's the one to beware of, for she is misleading, leaving us hopeful that her unpredictability will be on our side at the right time and place. Red Rose
