Gamblers Amnesia

8 replies • Last post

Hi CL Members,

So many times i have set limits on myself. Whether i am heading out to the land casino or i am playing online. I will tell myself i will not spend over a certain amount of money! What is the first thing i do when i lose.......walk to the ATM machine........no let me rephrase that........RUN to the ATM machine when i am at the land casino!!

The thing about it is, i am so confident in myself that i am going to stick to a plan. I swear that this time i mean business. I have set my limit and that's it i am going to stick to it. It is like all of a sudden a split personality kicks in and has no clue of the commitment i just made before entering that casino! I call it Gamblers Amnesia!

Oh another great promise i make is i will not go below a certain amount of credits. I am spinning and see that i have just flew past the set amount i set to cash out. Again Gamblers Amnesia has stepped in and took over.

Has anyone else suffered from Gamblers Amnesia?

Sorry I forgot ... what was the question?

Wink

Its actually a very important question that delves into psychology. Winning gives you a rush and you seem to remember the rush of winning long after the downer of a loss. That split personality you speak of could well be the dopamine levels in your brain tricking you. A minority of people are unable to adequately control these feelings and can become gambling addicts.

We've published a few interesting articles on the topic over time. Here are some good ones I found:
Research shows brain responds similarly to wins and near-miss losses
Canadian researchers use rats to study gambling addiction

Ya have to go in with that mind set kola. Its all a gamble and we have to accept we may lose. I think a real gambler has a tough time setting limits. But in order to be ahead our game we have to. Unless your kola who has the horseshoe all the time!!

lol...i have goals...but mine are only set to win...I go to the casino with $300...I cash $200 in chips - leaving $100 in my pocket...my goals are if I lose $100 in chips I cashout and walk with $200 or if I win $500 in chips I cash in $200 - now leaving me with my orginial $300...and $300 in chips to play with. If I lose the $300 then I start all over again...but if I'm able to turn that $300 into $1000...I cashout $500...and I hope to keep doing that until I have $2800 total and I move on the VIP tables to raise the stakes and win more but I will pocket $1300...and play with the remaining $1500...bottom line...the most i'm gonna lose is $100 for the day....and win....the very least $1000 Martini

Thanks ed for the articles. I have also read that women are much more inclined to be addicted than men where gambling is concerned. There is a definite high when we win, i know my dopamines are running wild!

LOL, I totally have that. Every aspect of what you said, I have done. Especially the "I won't go below a certain number of credits". I found if I just cash out so much, and leave myself some to play with I do okay. (of course I have to contain myself from re-depositing my winnings)

Its the thrill of the game that is for sure elck! When we are having such a good time it is very hard to walk away. And of course we get greedy. Always hoping we can win more!
