Are They Running Out of Slot Concepts?

18 replies • Last post

Hiya,

I have been noticing this more and more. There are a number of slot games that are so similar but released by different software companies. For example, Betonsoft's Samba Spins is very similar to Cryptologic's Samba Nights. Vegas Technology has Kanga Cash which is almost an exact version of the Cryptologic slot called Kanga Cash. I used to play that at Intercasino back in the day. It's a little old school to be a new release now.

I'm sure there's tons more out there. What slots have you found to be knock offs? Why do you suppose they copy the concepts? Are they running out of original ideas so they try to steal from other successful games?

That's true, so many slot games look like just one another! They maybe leak creativity or think that of they copy something successful, they'll be successful too. I can suggest you to try Playborne Slots: there are tones of them, some with original storyline to keep you engaged all the time ! Here are some of them : Pharaoh's Treasure - with an Ancient Egypt Motif; True 3D Classic Slots - dedicated to realistic graphics, sounds, and interface; Fruit Basket Classic - with the look and feel of Fruit Basket Video Slot, with an eye toward simple, easy, a bit banal but still addictive game play; La Mexicaine Classic Slots- true to its name, the motif is that of Mexican iconography: Sombreros and Maracas, Cacti and Chili Peppers; Las Vegas Slots- combines iconic people and things with low key but persistent music in a classic game, creating an atmosphere that both calls out to and draws the player into the Las Vegas experience; Liberty Bell- check it out yourself ๐Ÿ˜‰ ; Aztec Treasure - featuring sights and sounds that might be familiar to those with even a cursory knowledge of Aztec culture and Gangster City - It is not often that a game of slots is developed so well that the player will find themselves more interested in playing through the multiple levels of bonus games than they will in winning the slots. Gangster City is just such a game!

I have a surprise for you - Playborne games will soon appear on CL free games section! ๐Ÿ˜ Till then, you can check them out at democasino.playborne.com ๐Ÿ™‚

Usne I agree that many of new slots look just the same as ols ones and most of them, as I mentioned, are just "copys" of those by famous providers. Playborne, I checked out some of them you lited - not all, there are too many. To say honestly, I liked Liberty Bell and Gangster City- very engaging, I didn't check Las Vegas Slots as the name didn't really intrigue me. As for the others, I'll come back in this thread to voice my feedback.

I don't know that designers are running out of ideas, there are a million different things you could put on slot symbols. I think its more a case of designers being cheap and/or lazy. It doesn't matter what you do, being creative always costs more - either in time and effort or money.

My two most worn out slot concepts have to be these:

1. Ancient Egyptians, Cleopatra, Rameses, the Nile etc. It has been done a thousand times before! (sorry playborne!)
2. Aztecs, Incas, Montezuma etc - the golden theme

That Kanga Cash one is strange. Cryptologic licenses their games to other casinos. For example Fat Cat appears at Vegas Tech and Cryptologic casinos. So maybe they licensed it and changed the symbols or something.

The leprechaun theme is excessive as well. If I see another I think I'll scream.

I haven't tried Mafia Story yet playborne. I did enjoy Gangster City once I worked out that I needed to collect 10 keys in the bonus round. And turning off the steam in the safe room had me stumped for a little while too! But I liked the puzzle aspect.

Oh yes Leprechauns and pots of gold... boooring.

Except for playborne's leprechaun lady of course!

I have been through my fair share of slot games and I have to say that the range of types of games out there is absolutely staggering. What amazes me the most is the sheer variety of slots creators are capable of coming with. They range from dull to exciting, from simple to incomprehensible, from boring to fun, from wholly unoriginal to wonderfully unique.

As I go through my fair share of slots, every once in a while on this thread I will post one that I find to be notable in some way. To start, here are really notable for one reason or another:

โ€ข Because itโ€™s hilarious: Mid-life crisis: http://www.casinolistings.com/jackpots/rtg/midlife-crisis-jackpot. Itโ€™s about all satisfying that terrible and undeniably comical period in a manโ€™s life. Read the paytable, CL review and play for a few minutes and youโ€™ll see why this one had me laughing for awhile.

โ€ข Because itโ€™s a lot of fun and different: Germinator. This one is really addictive. Lots of fun, lovable germs to go around in this one.

This has made me think. Yes, a lot of new games are predominately the same of late. But I have played one called Le Posh Nosh, and I specifically remember the article for it stating that it is the first 25-line slot game.

Ok, I actually signed up here just so that i could sound like a shameless shill for Win a Day/SlotLand. Sad. WaD is particualarly innovative. I guess they hired a flash developer and didn't bother to update any of slotland's Stuff. It is rough looking but fun to play. The 4 that stand out to me:
Slotland:
Blackjack slots - you're dealt 3 hands and play against the dealer; but any decision (raise, double) goes for all cards at the same time. It's impossible to win, but fun.
Slotris: Tetris + Slots = insanity. It's impossible and sometimes I randomly get multipliers that I don't understand, but its a great throwback. You actually get to move and interchange the pieces, so there is some skill based.
Win a Day: I love their stuff. Pretty and fun. My two favorites are
Busted (Cops and robbers):
You have to collect all the pieces as the cop or the robber to trigger the dice game, where you can win or lose big - on .02 line bets I've had a $150 jackpot that i missed by 1 pip of the die. Cop chases robbber, robber runs from cop. If you don't catch (or get caught) you get nada.
Fair Tycoon:
You just have to play it. it really is cool. You collect points and attractions during the normal game and when you have what you think will be enough points you can choose to go to the bonus game where you buy attractions and place them around your park; depending on how good of a job you did, you get generously bonused (I was even commended by the mayor). The catch is that you really have to play for a bit to get to the bonus round. Totally worth it though, and most of their games maintain session, so you can come back to where you left off and keep playing.

I also play a lot at 3dice, but their slots are extremely frustrating to me. I mostly play tournaments and can go and entire one (250+ spins without ever hitting anything). My tin foil hat doesn't do a good job preventing me from believing that they actually hate me and ratchet down my potential success. ๐Ÿ˜‚

My point is that there are still new and innovative slots out there, but I think that people are content playing the exact same slot over and over with different pictures (ahem, rtg). As long as people keep eating poop, companies will feed them poop.

HI and welcome Jeopardy and cvbeck.

That Le Posh Nosh game is definitely not the world's first 25 line machine - they meant it was the first 25 liner with nudge and hold controls. That could make for an interesting game with a bit of skill thrown in.

Great post cvbeck. I agree about Slotland and Winaday. Winaday in particular is very innovative, although Slotland's html-only games are looking a bit tired these days. I always used to like Booster at Slotland though, where your losing spins accumulate into a bank that you can use to win from later.

Also good call on Germinator BB84. I love the "avalanche" or waterfall" feature that is appearing in more and more games now. Gonzo's Quest is another one like it. We'll have Germinator on free play here real soon, along with a bunch of other Microgaming games.
