People Watching

22 replies • Last post

Hiya,

For me part of the experience at a land casino is the people watching. We have all seen and heard things that have shocked or irritated us at the casino. On a recent land based trip I really saw some crazy characters.

One of my classic pet peeves is when someone takes up two machines. It's a packed night and they have two poker machines to themselves. Even worse than that is when people stand behind you and watch you play. Unless they're bringing me luck, get lost! 😠

My list could go on and on but now I want to give you the chance to share your pet peeves, crazy stories or anything related to people you've encountered in the casino.

Hi Usne, I completely share your pet peeves listed above, and I'd add the situation when you're trying to concentrate and are very tense, and a waitress (half nude) comes to you and offers drink that you already hold a glass of.... This makes me mad!

I'm with you on that Sophia. I'm lucky if I can even get a drink though.

People who place bets behind you when you're playing blackjack and then tut or sigh when I do something they don't agree with. I mean hello... if you don't like what I am doing then get your own damn seat and make your own decisions! And most of the time they are clueless and are tutting when I'm standing with a 14 against a 6 or something...

Also it adds to the pressure when they bet much bigger than you do. I had a guy playing on my box with $100 chips when I was playing $5 blackjack once. That was nerve-wracking. And he didn't even give me a tip after I won him about a grand!

Oh Ed I bet it's worse at the tables. There's always so many people crowded around tables that it's a little more understandable that someone would be around you than at a slot or video poker machine. But to sigh and make comments 😈

I don't know how you hold your tongue when people throw in their 2 cents. Have you ever said anything?

No but I find the silent death stare usually works wonders 😈

I've a person wearing latex gloves and a mask while at the slots. What's with that? I get that not everyone smokes but the fanning of smoke is annoying too. There's always a non-smoking area.

Yep the silent death look will do it. 😂 I've had to use it a few times myself.

Savannah the fanning drives me crazy too and I seen the crazies with the gloves here and there.

Gloves? What on earth for? Are they afraid they are going to catch a disease off the slot machine buttons? If so why would you go near the machine, aren't you taking a big risk just to play? Crazies indeed.

that's probably the strangest thing I've ever heard 🙂

This is one (and not the only) reason why online casinos are better. I will dedicate one blog post to it actually 🙂

I assume the gloves are for these extreme germaphobes and the mask is for the toxic deadly cigarette smoke. I was just in awe. I know it's incredibly weird and I saw this on more than one occasion if you can believe that.

I've seen people with those mini fans blowing their faces lmaoooooo.

I have had people criticize me at the blackjack table before, and it is really quite ignorant on their part. I play with basic strategy and when something comes up that they do not recognize, such as doubling down on a 9 versus a dealer 3 they get all huffy. Even worse is when it doesn't pay off...these "experts" need to chime in and let me know how bad of a play it was.

It really is aggravating, and the only consolation I can find is later on in the night when I am still playing and they have been hit for their entire bankroll.

Another blackjack one that I hate is when you make a correct play according to basic strategy and lose, and then the next guy on the table draws a bad card and then blames you for his loss because the card you drew would have suited him nicely.

And then the reverse ... some muppet with no idea what they are doing makes a totally wrong play causing you to miss out on the very card you needed. That is very frustrating!

It drives me nuts when I walk up to a slot machine and the chair is missing. Someone has taken it two machines down to watch someone else play. That really ticks me off.

OMGosh, gloves? I remember when we had to wear the WHITE gloves so not to get dirty from handling all the money, but hello? We use bills and tickets now, lol! I have yet to see gloves and masks. Unless someone is very ill, I would probably not be able to help laughing.

Taking up TWO machines during BUSY times really ticks me off, too! It should NOT be allowed. I mean if it is 3a.m and empty, but otherwise there is NO excuse.

My good friend got into quite the argument with a woman who had the nerve to complain about her smoking in the SMOKING section! I try to be polite when I smoke, but you ARE sitting there and casinos are the only place left where we can smoke INDOORS!!!

I have been fortunate enough to sit by friendly people at the tables (Hold'em and Blackjack) who put up with this "newbie," but I have seen them roll their eyes at others when watching my brother play. I don't play either game often, at the casino.

I always hate being interrupted by someone who wants to chit chat (a little is okay, but enough is enough!) when I am on a roll, because it always seems to bring bad luck. Otherwise, I just agree with all your pet peeves and I am still shaking my head over the gloves and mask. It would be funny to see someone walk around with a gas mask on, lol! That would be good! If the smoke bothers you THAT much go to the non-smoking or gamble at HOME, right?

I hate it when people lean over me pushing me out the way at the roulette table to place their bets - they can't be bothered to walk around. Also I find it incredibly annoying to see people being rude to the dealers, throwing chips and money at them to place, it's like manners go out the window when some people get near a roulette table...

CL-Ed - I hear you, but the card that the muppet wrongly took could have set you up for a good card as easily as a bad one.

Don't mind people watching or background noise but people commenting on your technique/skills just bugs me.

LOL a funny thread, indeed.

I agree on everything listed above, especially on Usne's one no chair at sots machine - "Someone has taken it two machines down to watch someone else play."

And the thing that amazes me is when in the process of playing, someone comes up and asks how to play blackjack? or roulette ? or even Slots ? I'm mad of all the wealthy newbie casino players 😂
