What's the last good movie you watched?

Heya everyone!

September's getting near to its end, and autumn's already come to our lives. This is the time of year when most of us abandon clubbing and prefer going to some less active place or even stay in and watch a good movie, enjoying a big bag of popcorn and a giant coke.

Now, I have to admit that, in the past few years I have frequently been to the cinema, but saw merely a couple of decent movies. Is it that movies nowadays are dumber than they used to be, or I'm not good at picking a good movie, I'm not sure. But I definitely need some recommendations for the colder days that are ahead of us!

Not my favorite sitcom, GM, but I am glad you are enjoying it. It IS a popular series. All my favorite sitcoms are over, and the one I still watch, "The Office," is disappointing this season, without Michael. I think they should have ended the entire series with the "Good-bye Michael" episode. Just like "Two and a half Men," should have ended when Charlie left. Just not the same shows without the main stars. (IMHO).

I miss the good days of better sitcoms like "Seinfeld," and "Friends." A newer, popular one this season is "The New Girl," but I only watched the first episode, so far.

To my disappointment, Pieces of April is not on "free-to-stream Netflix," so I am watching another Thanksgiving movie on there, called, "What's Cooking." Lots of diversity, many different families, with all their problems and trials and tribulations, cooking their traditional feasts. Warning: do not watch while hungry, lol! I guess the DVD has recipes for all dishes prepared in the movie. It is just "okay" so far, because nothing can top my Pieces of April, which will always be my fave Thanksgiving movie. I am still trying to find it online somewhere, because it is not on Project Free TV or on any of the links I followed to try to find. I am going to have to break down and buy it, since I try to watch it every year, lol.

Oh, and I just realized I can watch the above movie on Amazon for 1.99, which isn't so bad. 🙂

Friends is one of my favorite too! The plot, actors and jokes- so sophisticated for just sitcoms! I miss those days too..

The only sitcom I still watch, now, is "The Office," but I am not liking it as much without Michael. I don't like the new "James Spader" character at all (Robert California) but I still watch, because I like the rest of the cast. Still, it is not the same, and I think they should have ended when Michael left. JMHO!

Since we are discussing TV, and not just movies, I hope it is okay to mention my new addiction, "The Good Wife." Does anyone watch this series? I watched an entire TWO seasons on Project Free and I am now caught up to where they are in Season Three. Great writing, great characters and acting. I cannot get enough of this show! Maybe we need another thread for favorite TV shows? lol I have a list of my top five or so. 😉

I've seen a lot of the good wife. Actually it was my wife who started watching it and I kind of got into it after a while. You are right, it has some excellent writing and acting. I am finding that more and more these days - if you want to see some quality stories and acting, they are all in TV series as opposed to movies.

Another TV show that I just watched the first series of is Game of Thrones. It is the best thing I have watched in a long time, maybe since The Wire or the new Battlestar Galactica. I highly recommend it, the characters are so devious and the story is so engrossing. The worst thing is it is based on the George R.R. Martin book series A Song of Ice and Fire which isn't even finished yet (I think there are 5 or 6 books so far). The TV series only covers book 1 so I'm desperately hanging out for the next series of the show to be released, and I've borrowed the books which are now stacked on my desk at home.

Have you watched the UK series of The Office hope? The U.S. one is good but not a patch on the original with Ricky Gervais.

I've seen Wizard of Oz, I haven't seen it since childhood and remembered my economics class, when Mr. Gregory stated about the metaphors used in the movie as economical terms and effects.

Ed I agree with you on that one - game of thrones is such a good show! I love the little dwarf guy (the imp) he is so clever and cunning yet very funny too.

CL-ED, I have never heard of that series. I will have to check it out. I actually watched a couple of UK Offices, and I prefer the US version. Sorry. Just couldn't get into it even though I ADORE Ricky Gervais, and I have watched him on the U.S. Office and in many movies. He is great! 🙂 I think I just couldn't get into it, because I was so used to the U.S. Office. Might give it another try.

I started The Wire, then got sidetracked, so I will have to get back into that. LOVE that you watch the Good Wife. Don't you just adore Eli? He is such a great character. I also love Kalinda, even though she was a bad, bad, girl. Love the scene where she takes it out on what's his name's car (drawing a blank right now, was it Blake?). That was awesome. I love the music in the series, too. I have found three great new artists (well, new to me) due to the show. Do you have any idea why Seasons One and Two have 23 episodes and now I heard that next week's Season Three episode is the finale and it is only at Episode THIRTEEN. That truly bummed me out and I can't find the reason online, anywhere, although I am sure it has to do with ratings and money.

I really think we might have to start a separate thread for TV shows, past and present, that we love and adore, lol. On that note, is anyone watching the NEW FX crazy show, "American Horror Story?" I didn't really plan to watch, but I got sucked into this one, too, and I do really like it. It is on tonight, and I will find it on Project Free TV an hour after it airs. Still watching Dexter, too, which is heating up toward the Season Finale.

Oh, so many great shows, and so little time. I wish someone would pay me good money to watch, watch, watch, lol! 😉

Brilliant idea on how to make money and pleasure simultaneously 🙂

However, I quit watching How I met your mom, I don't even know why.. maybe because of time shortage... anyway, it had not so good reviews 🙂

I was trying to quote but someone didn't do it right so I will edit. Here is the post I was replying to

"I watched 2012 last night and that was a stinking turkey of a movie. It was among the most ridiculously unbelievable rubbish I have ever seen. I lost count of the stupid things I saw in that movie ...

I want the 2.5 hours of my life back!"

I felt the same way about Battle Los Angeles. What a waste of time. The cinematography wasn't even good. I was not connected to any of the characters. This was one movie I just wanted to be over.

The last movie that made me laugh was 30 Minutes or Less. It's about a pizza delivery guy who delivers his last pizza of the day only to be met by thugs who want him to rob a bank. They put a bomb on him and watch his every move. It's not the best movie I've ever seen but I would give it a 3/5.

Another one I watched recently is One Day. It's about a working class girl who meets a jetsetter. Each year in July, the movie shows where they are in their relationships. I would give it a 3/5 too. More of a girly movie. The ending is not predictable so I liked that.

Blockbuster is having a 30 day free rental so actually I am watching all these movies free. 3 movies out at one time..I get them by mail. Hope I'm allowed to mention their name, if not please edit.

I saw Arthur Christmas with my daughter today. It was great. It has the best explanation for how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just 1 night. When the movie opens with a boy reading a letter to Santa that says "Santa if you live in the North Pole why can't see your house on Google Earth?" you just know its going to be good!

Sometimes I miss the days of having to sit through the "kiddy" movies, because some did, indeed, end up being quite good and quite fun! I miss being up on all the latest toys and "kiddy" fads. I went from that to knowing all the teen bands, movies, books, etc., lol, and my sons have introduced me to SO many good movies, good music, books, and even comedians, but I need some grandchildren, now, so I can have an excuse to watch Arthur's Christmas, and more, once again, lol. 🙂

Hi Jenny,

If you just click on the "quote" button, it should pop up in the empty reply box, then you can go under the quote and type away! 🙂

I want to see that "30 Minutes or Less." Sounds kind of fun. Great deal through Blockbuster. I have the Netflix, free to stream only right now, and I love that I can watch the movies on the TV through the X-box for only 10 bucks per month or 60 per year. I can recommend a few movies to you if you have the free trial much longer. Great movies listed in these threads, too.

Will have to be later, because I am back to wrapping Christmas gifts and it is after 2am. All I want for Christmas is some SLEEP! lol! 🙂

The last good movie I watches was The Big Fish by Tim Burton! The movie is so unbelievably kind and positive, it can't be expressed with words...

Hey GM! Thanks for mentioning this one, because I really like Tim Burton, and I don't think I have even heard of The Big Fish. I will definitely be checking it out.

My middle son just loved The Nightmare Before Christmas when he was younger. He was obsessed with it for a while, lol. I remember, too, when my nieces and nephews were very little and my sons wanted to watch that with them, and I was SO worried they would become too frightened. Well, we sat them all down on the couch, turned on the movie, and they laughed and laughed. lol My worries were soon over. I guess you cannot predict children's reactions.

I just checked out Big Fish on IMDB, and although the cover looks really familiar, I don't believe I have seen that one yet (and from 2003!). I will have to ask my son if he has seen it, too.

Wow! And IMDB, a site known for its very stingy ratings gave it an 8 out of ten, which is honestly VERY generous for them. I am checking out this one SOON! 🙂

I have started a new TV series from Showtime. It rated number three after Dexter and Weeds. The title is "Shameless," and it is adapted from a Brittish version that ran for nine seasons, I believe.

The new version is just one season, so far, with Season Two coming out in January. I am about half way through Season One (on my project free TV, as usual). The series is about a family whose mom split years ago and the family is left with drunk, out of control dad, Frank Gallagher, played by William H. Macy. The oldest daughter runs the house but all the children pitch in, and they range in ages from late teens to toddler. Of course, they get into all kinds of trouble and "fixes," and dad doesn't really care, yet he says it is him who is "holding the family together."

At first I wasn't sure if I would like it, but the characters are extremely likeable and each episode gets better.

I already cannot wait for Season Two, and I am not even finished with the first season.

Here is the wiki link about the British series:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shameless

IMDB link on the new series:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1586680/

The title says, "The Gallaghers....Absolutely, Wildly, Unapologetically......Shameless." lol

The woman who played the Principal in School of Rock is in the series, too. I have always loved her and think she is soooo good in comedies: Joan Cusack.

I watched Big Fish last year. I remember it left me with a sense of hope.

Another movie I recently rented is One Day with:
Anne Hathaway as a working-class girl who creates a friendship with a wealthy jet-setter that spans two decades. Every July 15th for the next 20 years, we see how their lives have changed. I would rate it 7/10. Probably more of a chick flick.

No Netflix free to stream, but I am going to try to find this on Project Free TV. One way or the other, this will be on the top of my list for "must see movies." Every now and then, we miss one that comes along, and have to be sure not to miss it the second time around.
