How (not) to win

13 replies • Last post

I recently read two articles. One was about a progressive jackpot winner, a lady who was lucky enough to win almost a million bucks. The other one was about a lottery winner Michael Carroll, a bin-man who won over 9 million pounds, and spent them all on drugs and parties in just a few years' time.

This made me wonder, what happens to people who win big? How do they spend this chance for a happily-ever-after outcome? I guess the worst case scenario is the bin-man's, who just indulged his money so much, that it left his side pretty quickly.

"Gamble responsibly" - I think this is the best advice offered to people who venture to play in an online casino. Because if you lose too much, you may find yourself in debts, and if you win too much, you may realize that you're not really prepared for richness.

Now, my question would be: How do you think you'd behave if you won such a big sum? What would you spend it on? You think you'd just feel lucky to have gotten it? Are you sure? Think twice.

Hiya Cat,

You pose a very interesting question. To be honest i am not sure i would want to win a huge sum of money. It is life altering that is for sure and also fearful. How will that change my life is the concern.

I have heard of many stories of people winning a large sum of money and their lives are destroyed. The elusive dream of rags to riches ends up being nothing more than a nightmare. Too often they squander their riches and it is gone with nothing left in their bank account but charges for insuffient funds.

I don't think this is limited to big winners who suddenly amass a fortune either. Whether your born into it, earn it or win it comes with consequences. Your at the top your game, the top of the heap! There is no dreams left, nothing to strive for. This is where the trouble begins. This is when the prospect of a brand new world opens up.....sex, drugs and rocking roll! The dream already acheived, leaves them in search for something bigger and better. Unfortunately that road ends up to drug addicts, alcholism and less then a loyal partner.

I think i will stick with my simple life of earning just enough money to live comfortably. Only thing i ask is a semi big win now and again......lets say.......100K!

I guess this would be the smartest thing you could do. Wait 'till you pull yourself together, and then decide rationally what to use it for. I know that , most likely, I would buy some real estate. A house at the seaside would be nice. Smile And another one in a spa. Smile And a penthouse in London... Darn! See, see what thinking about money can do to you! Money

I would be quite happy with a massive jackpot win thank you very much! I can safely say that I am not as stupid as that King of Chavs guy who wasted it all on drugs and hookers.

Some of the better casinos put players into contact with a lawyer and financial adviser when they win a big progressive jackpot.

Really?! Didn't know that! Well, that's very nice of them. They give you the money, and they provide a financial adviser for you. Smile Anyway, I don't think many of us would be soooo dumb to spend all that money on virtually nothing and to get yourself to work as a binman despite the good fortune that smiled at you. Especially when you see that someone actually pulled it off...

I would be very willing to be their financial advisor! I would not even ask for a penny to help them out. Just let me live in the guest house. Ya know the one that over looks the sea.....

Hahaha, Zuga, that's what I call wishful thinking! I have to agree with Ed on this, it's hardly possible, really! Tongue
