Tell us about your......PETS!

43 replies • Last post

Hi Friends!

The other day I was thinking how nice it would be to share a little bit about our pets. You know. For those animal lovers out there, and you know you are out there.

I am a HUGE animal lover, and I always have been, since I was a child. I love all kinds of animals, and especially cats and dogs, but especially dogs. I also have a fondness for the dachshund breed that goes above and beyond all other love for animals. I have also rescued many animals and found them shelters, through the years.

I don't want this thread to end up being competitive, like convincing someone that cats are better than dogs or dogs better than cats, nor do I want any derogatory words aimed toward animals, so if you do not like a certain kind of pet or animal, breed of dog, etc., please simply do not comment. In other words, let's keep this thread POSITIVE, okay? 🙂

I have a beautiful little, short haired, black and tan dachshund, named Otis. He is the joy of our lives. He is 11 and 1/2 years old now. I tell him he has to live until he is at least 21 years old. I have many stories to tell you about Otis, which I will save for later.

I grew up with two dachsies, and I never thought I would have one, or want one, as an adult. I had a couple of other breeds in mind. I then saw dachsie puppies in a pet shop one day (they are the cutest puppies, ever! lol) and I fell in love all over again, and I was on a quest to find a good breeder, which I soon did. I brought Otis home, in 2000, close to Mother's Day that year, and he weighed 3.5 pounds. My sons fell in love with him, as did I, instantly.

Dachsies have great personalities. They are like little clowns, always trying to make "their hoomans" laugh. They are very protective of their families, very loyal. They are very sensitive and pick up on all moods so easily, so very perceptive. Dachshunds are very smart, but they can be very stubborn, too. They are natural hunters, having been bred in Germany to hunt the ferocious Badger. They are largely ruled by treats...and food. More so than many breeds. In the hound dog class, their noses are always to the ground, trying to find that next scent to track.

Otis was named after the Otis on Mayberry (the Andy Griffith show) with a bit of Otis Redding thrown in. I named him in honor and memory of my dad, who loved dachshunds and had a heart of gold when it came to all animals. His full name is Otis McFee, the last name coming from my brother (don't ask, lol).

I have been posting such long threads tonight, and I have to stop now, so I will post about my son's cat, tomorrow. I have temporary custody of Olivia, and she has added much to our family. Most likely, there will be more about Otis, too. 😉

After we get our pets introduced to everyone, I thought it would be a good idea, in order to keep this thread going, to come back and tell little stories about cute and funny things our pets do or have done, either in the past or as they happen. That way, we can keep sharing about the some very important members of our families.

Also, I think it would be great to share some photos of our pets. After all, who doesn't love to show off those precious furbabies? 🙂 🙂 🙂

I look forward to reading about your pet(s)!

Hope 🙂

Hi Hope,
this thread is just for me,as I just love animals, and just like you, especially dogs! I sometimes even prefer spending time with them than with some people.. They're the real friends that are always ready to listen to your problems and never leave when you need them!

As a story of my pet is quite sad, I'll just regret telling it to you. All I can say is that take care of your pets and never be lazy to take a walk or play with them!

I have a beagle/spaniel mix named Sweetie that is four years old. She is a real handful, but always keeps me company when I am working by sleeping on my blankets. All in all, shes a pretty cool dog.

I also have a saltwater aquarium with a variety of fish and snails. It is very relaxing to just watch the fish sometimes, and keeping a tank going is not very hard at all!

I think each and every breed of dogs have their own functions, or what you may call it, the reason to be. I think Pit Bulls are mainly for dog-fighting, as they are not very loyal, can even bite the owner sometimes....

Just last week my wife and I got a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We rescued her from a shelter about an hour away. She's an awesome dog, very calm, very good with kids. Her name is Princess and she is 3 years old.

What do you think?

Awwwwwww.....thanks for sharing! I think that little face is precious as can be! I love Corgis, too, but then, I just love dogs, lol.

GOOD FOR YOU for rescuing. If I ever can afford another pet, that is what I will do. Glad you found one another and that Princess now has her "forever home."

My second pet is actually my son's pet. My youngest son's living situation changed so I offered to do my part by taking in Olivia, my very first "grand furbaby." Otis was ten years old at the time, and he had always been the only pet. It took me an entire week end to get them used to one another, but I gave her own private place in my closet, where she can get away on her own (and get fed so the big dachsie doesn't steal her food, lol). Soon, they were not only used to one another but they sleep on the same bed often! I think it is fun to have them both, but the one thing that I will not miss when she goes is the little box. However, our love for her helps me to put up with that...for now.

Olivia is a beautiful cat, and the only cat I have known who will come to me when I whistle, lol. I brush her and care for her, and she is a very sweet, friendly cat. My youngest son rescued her from a shelter when she was two year old, so she is around 3 and 1/2 years old now.

I LOVE beagles, but then, of course, they are also in the "hound dog" class. I love her name. Your aquarium does sound like a nice, relaxing thing to have as well.

Thanks for sharing, and when you get a chance post a pic of Sweetie. 🙂

I am sorry to hear this! Maybe it is time to get another pet? I walk my Otis every day, no matter how bad I feel. He looks so forward to his walks, and I figure it is the least that I can do for him, because he brings us such joy.

I think Bulldogs are cute as heck. In fact, some dogs are "so ugly that they are cute." Don't bulldogs usually have good personalities? You crack me up, saying it is a "terrible dog." Reminds me of my friend who has a crazy chihuahua named Sarge. She calls him, "nasty," but I know she loves him dearly, lol! I am only one of two people outside that family who Sarge will let near him.

What is your Bulldog's name? How old?

I feel sorry for pitbulls. It is not their fault that owner's have horrible motives for wanting them. However, due to past experiences (not personal, but hearing things) I can't even trust the "tame" ones.

As a father of young children who has read about children being killed by these sorts of dogs I can say that I don't think anyone has a reason to own a pitbull. They are bred to fight, they have no place in a someone's home.

Hope I love the burrito picture. So cute! When I saw your dog was called Otis and then you posted a cat I was thinking it had to be called Milo, from on old film the Adventures of Milo and Otis.. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097050/

Slim, good choice of names. She looks like a princess and I guess she's a corgi so the name fits!

I do not even think of getting a new pet. The stress and pain was so hard when my pet died, that I do not want to go under this anymore..... And when getting a pet, this is inevitable... you can not avoid such a fact, as unfortunately every pet lives shorter than humans. Oh, and I do not really like the idea of owning a raven!

I get that a lot, CL-Ed, but nope. He was named after the Mayberry town drunk, Otis, lol, with a bit of Otis Redding thrown in for good measure, in memory of my dad, as I said. Oti's breeder told us we picked the puppy with the cutest face, and he does have so many different expressions. My middle son is the one who wrapped him up in his blanket, lol. Dachsies also love to burrow under blankets, get themselves in tight spaces, etc., as they were bred to burrow, too.

As far as the pitbulls go, I have a story. Where my mom stays in FL the son of the man she rents from had a pitbull. Mom was not afraid of the dog at all, and he was gentle and the owner had him for eight years. Nice family pet, right? Well, mom had an older couple over to play cards and the minute the man got out of the car, the pitbull knocked him down and bit him. It could have been much worse, but it did require a trip to the E.R. The shocking part was IN EIGHT YEARS that dog had NEVER bit anyone or shown aggression. It could not have been that the dog had anything against men, either, because the owner was (obviously) a man. I hear these stories of how unpredictable these dogs can be, and I can and never will trust them, no matter how friendly they are said to be.
