Movies about Gambling

38 replies • Last post

There are lots of movies about casinos, gambling, etc. They are usually very good ones, thrilling and with interesting plot.

My favourite one is 21. What's yours?

21 was an ok movie, but had plenty of factual errors and even downright wrong advice when they were discussing blackjack strategy. As an experienced blackjack player some of the things they said in the movie made me laugh.

My favourite is probably Casino. There are plenty of good ones - Rounders, The Sting, The Hustler, The Color of Money, Ocean's Eleven (not really about gambling but set in a casino). The Gambler is also very good, showing the dark side of gambling addiction.

yeah, 21 has many factual errors, but I still like it, because the movie is not boring and has sth that grabs your attention.

I haven't seen Casino, I checked it on IMDB and has a very impressive cast. I think I would consider your recommendation 🙂

My favorite is Ocean's 11 ! Great cast, engaging plot, great director! I mean the old Ocean's 11, directed in1960 by Lewis Milestone and starring five Rat Packers: Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Joey Bishop! Highly Recommend it !

I didn't know that the Ocean's 11 with Clooney and Pitt was a remake. Interesting..

Actually you are right, I'm young, but I love the oldies more than modern things. Nouvelle Vague movies are my favs 🙂 recommend them

One more good old gambling movie I've just remembered- Rain Man ! With Tom Cruise and his autistic older brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), there’s still plenty of time to head to Vegas and engage in a little card counting. The Hangover (which is better known, I think) is the parody and kind of re-make of Rain Man, highly recommended!

The Hangover a parody and remake of Rain Man?!? You gotta be kidding me, lol. I can see the one spot where Alan is playing blackjack, but the other 99 minutes of the film? Not even close.

despite the blackjack scene, in both movies there are autistic characters involved.. And if you watch carefully, you'll catch some more changes, although I do not quite remember hangover, it's not one of my kind.

I do not agree with this comparison of Rain Man and Hangover, however, I understand what you meant. I just adore Rain Man, it is the movie of the high level, top of Hollywood production, whereas Hangover is just to have fun, not very valuable one.

I agree about Hangover, but actually it's not my idea to compare them, everybody says so, even the director of Hangover , so do not blame me on that 😂

I actually really enjoyed Rounders the most of any gambling movie. John Malkovitch as the Russian card boss is one of those classic roles that I think sticks with a lot of people.

"In my haus I splash de pot whenever.....the.......****.......I vant" 🚬

Apparently there's a sequel on the way.....in 2014 according to IMDB.

Casino is also excellent and a classic if you've got three hours to devote to it.

Yeah the casino scene in the Hangover is obviously a Rain Man parody but I'm struggling to see how the rest of the movie is!

I agree the two movies are very different from each other, but still there are some scenes that are similar.
Anyway, here's one more gambling movie that I adore: Croupier, with Clive Owen starring, and directed by Mike Hodges. Here's the quote from the review:

Quote:

To make ends meet and against his better judgment, he takes a job as a croupier. He realizes that this period of his life would make a great novel. One gambler in particular catches his attention: Jani, whom he starts to see outside working hours- a serious violation of casino rules…

the rest you must see yourself!

I love "Owning Mahowny. Shows just how self-destructive one can be, in relation to gambling. I also am partial to Phillip Seymour Hoffman movies. He does a great job in this film, as always.

I've heard that Owning Mahowny is based on a real life story : Owning Mahowny is based on a real-life incident: Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce clerk Brian Molony embezzled over $10 million from his employers in just 18 months to support his gambling habit. Molony's story was told in the best-selling 1987 book Stung by journalist Gary Ross, which formed the basis for the screenplay.

Owning Mahony looks interesting. I might have to track that down. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a strange but good actor.

I've not even heard of Mahony. Is it the new movie? Hoffman is a very good actor, in my opinion, at least, interesting one with his acting style. I like him after Doubt

Owning Mahony is directed in 2003, as for Hoffman, I respect him after I heard that he is in a relationship with costume designer Mimi O'Donnell. They met while working on the 1999 play In Arabia We'd All Be Kings, which Hoffman directed. They have 3 kids and are together for already 12 years! I love actors with stable personal relationships 😂

I love Tim Burton Helena Bonham Carter couple. I just reminded about celebrity relationships 🙂
Actually, has anybody seen Cincinnati Kid? in many rankings of movies about gambling, it gets very high points, thus it is not so easy to find and watch for me, so I want your advice, if it is worth of it?

Tiberius it has been a long time since I have seen it but from what I remember The Cincinnati Kid is pretty good. Steve McQueen, he's cool.

Hi Tiberius, the Cincinnati Kid is quite an old movie , "The Kid," is an up-and-coming poker player. He hears that a long-time master of the game nicknamed "The Man," is in town, and decides to take him on... The rest you should see yourself 🙂 But the move has no sense if you do not know the poker rules, or winning hands at least 😂
