Off to the (horse) Races!

4 replies • Last post

Hello Friends!

I just wanted to share something fun with you all. On Sunday, I attended the horse races at Canterbury Downs in Shakopee, Minnesota! I have had "attend a horse race" on my (unofficial) bucket list for a while now! Just because I have never attended, and I wanted to see what it would be like and thought it would be fun!

I try to get together with my three sons, and middle son's girlfriend, at least once per month. We weren't sure what to do when middle son's girlfriend texted him and said she had free tickets to the races for Sunday and did we want to go! YES! She knew a guy through work who had a horse in the final race of the day.

It was Breast Cancer Awareness and fundraising (silent auction, etc). and filly races. The horses were so beautiful, and I did NOT win any money but it was fun to bet a little. And a little goes a long way, unlike spending that many hours at a casino, lol!

Next week end they have camel and ostrich races! haha! We also have another track in North Branch, MN (I believe or could be Forest Lake?) called Running Aces. They race the "buggies" there, and that would also be fun.

Canterbury also hosts the dachshund races in September now. For those who do not know, I am a dachsie FANATIC and I own an 11 year old black and tan, mini, named Otis. 🙂 I did attend the dachsie races when Otis was two or three years old, but I haven't been since they changed the venue to Canterbury.

So, what fun, huh? I just wanted to share my little outing with you and see what you all think. Have you ever attended horse races? Did you win some big bucks? I really didn't know much about betting, so I kept my bets VERY low and walked out with money in my pocket, but I know people CAN win big at the races.

Let me know if you like the horse races and I would love to hear your experiences, too!

One more item crossed of the (unofficial) bucket list. Now, I just have to figure out how to get to Hawaii and Italy! lol! The beaches of Australia sound good too! haha!

Cheers~!

Your friend,

Hope 🙂

Sounds like you had a great time Hope. I've only been to the races twice. The thing that surprised me most was the feeling of the thundering ground as the horses go past you at the end. Like you say the horses are so impressive, I'd love ride one (and not fall off!!)

Apart from that I remember very little as a trip to the races here involves a lot of drinking 😉 🍺

I've not rode a horse since childhood, and have never been on the race, but i'd love to...

Unfortunately there are not such events often held in my country

I think the ostrich and camel races would be a hoot, lol! Except how do you figure out the track record for a specific ostrich or camel? lol!

Ed, the horses ARE beautiful, and one thing that we noted was how MUDDY the poor jockeys were when they got off the horses. Many had mud splattered all over them.

I used to ride horses when I was a teen, and I LOVED it! My mom actually took riding lessons with me for two summers, up around the lakes and trails of northern Minnesota. So beautiful. We had a lot of fun and very good memories. I even learned to ride bareback. The horse I always rode was named, Choya and she was so pretty. I took my boys a few times when they were young. I would love to go again someday. The fall would be a beautiful time to ride.

Thanks for all the comments and for reading the story about my new experience. 🙂 If I go to the buggy races, ever, I will post again! 🙂
