PlayHippo Casino is an online casino established in 2013 that runs on a multi-software platform offering games from a variety of suppliers. It is operated by PlayHippo Holding Ltd, Malta and is registered under the jurisdictions of United Kingdom, Malta and Curaçao. Last Updated: April 11, 2022.
The first thing that struck me upon visiting PlayHippo Casino was the bright colourful background and the cartoonish logo. This is definitely a casino that projects a friendly and welcoming vibe rather than so many others I have seen with a dark and "too-cool-for-school" style. The casino is available for play in-browser or on a mobile device, and is licensed to operate by authorities in the United Kingdom and Malta.
The casino is one of several that are run on the EveryMatrix platform - a package which allows the casino owner to choose from games provided by a rage of different developers. PlayHippo has chosen to go for Microgaming, Net Entertainment, Play'n Go and Betsoft games, which offer up a great selection of high quality games, albeit fewer than some of the other casinos that run on the same platform.
The latest games on offer at PlayHippo when I tested them out were The Invisible Man and Cosmic Fortune from Net Entertainment, and Game of Thrones from Microgaming. There are also a huge range of titles including favourites such as Dead or Alive, Playboy, Jack Hammer, Frankenstein, Aliens, and Immortal Romance. In all there were around 400 slot machines to choose from. Those who enjoy playing progressive games have plenty to choose from with the site offering a range of Net Entertainment jackpots, including the massive Arabian Nights, Hall of Gods, and Mega Fortune jackpots, along with a set from Microgaming featuring Mega Moolah as the largest 7 figure jackpot on offer. There are also smaller jackpots for various slot machines, Keno, Caribbean Stud, and the Golden Derby virtual horse racing game.
PlayHippo offers over 20 different table games, around 30 variants of video poker that allow you to pick single or multi-hand modes, plus a range of keno and parlour style games. Of these, the Net Entertainment "Pro Series" table games are probably the best, with excellent graphics, appropriate mood music and a slick interface. Unfortunately the casino does not offer live dealer games for those of you who prefer their cards dealt from a real deck.
The interface for browsing the games is adequate, if unspectacular. You get the usual grid of game logos and/or screenshots that are categorised several ways and arranged in page sizes of between 15 to 35 games (you can choose), and you have to page through them using buttons. One thing they definitely got right though was the inclusion of a quick search box that allows you to type in the name of a game and get results more or less on the spot without a page reload. The site also allows you to keep a list of favourite games which makes it easy to come back and find the ones you like on another day.
It is easy to move your money into your PlayHippo account, with the casino accepting deposits via common credit and debit cards, e-wallets such as Neteller, Skrill, EcoCard, and WebMoney, along with bank transfers and other methods such as UKash and Paysafecard. Most of those deposit options will get your money into your account instantly. Withdrawals are on par with other EveryMatrix platform casinos, and that is a very good thing. A test withdrawal made to a Neteller account was paid within 6 hours without requiring any proof of identification for our tester. However, in accordance with licensing rules, the casino is obligated to check your ID before you rack up more than €2300 in withdrawals, so you should expect to do this. It is worth bearing in mind that your first withdrawal made each month is free, while subsequent ones will cost you a 3% fee.
The support process at this casino is somewhat less polished. The only way you can contact PlayHippo is via email. There is no phone number for you to ring, nor is there even the option of live chat support. This may bother some people less than others, but in this day and age I regard some form of instant contact as a must for a top online casino, so it is disappointing not to even have the option given the quality of the rest of the operation. As part of the review process I sent two test emails and both were answered within a few hours.
As you would expect, PlayHippo uses an encrypted SSL connection to safeguard your privacy while you browse, login, transact and play at the casino. Although it was a little hard to find, being placed in a menu on the T&Cs page, it was pleasing to see that the casino publishes the theoretical RTP numbers for each and every game on the site, ordered from highest (All Aces Video Poker with 99.92%) to lowest (Hall of Fame scratch card at 85% - ouch!). Players who claim bonuses should be aware that there is an upper limit on the amount you may wager on a single spin or hand while playing with a bonus. For most people it is €8, but for selected countries it is only €4. The limit is not enforced in the software while you play so it is possible to break it without being aware. Caveat emptor!
In terms of responsible gambling controls, you are able to set limits on your deposits, losses, wagering, and even a session time limit from within the account settings section of the site. You can also exclude yourself from logging in for a period of up to 1 year, though if you would like permanent exclusion you need to contact support via email.
PlayHippo states that it keeps customer funds separate from business accounts used to run the casino. However these funds still form part of the assets of the company so in the event of the casino becoming insolvent or wound up, player balances are not protected from being claimed by creditors looking to recover their money. This form of protection only meets the UKGC "basic" level of customer funds segregation, which is more or less equivalent to no protection at all.
I saw a lot that I liked at PlayHippo. In terms of the most important factors, the game selection is good and the withdrawals are very fast. However there are definite improvements that could be made to this casino. In particular some form of instant support is sorely lacking, whether it be instant chat or telephone, and an expanded game selection and/or live dealer games would be a welcome addition.
