Review of EmuCasino
Emu Casino is certainly one of the more uniquely named casinos that we have seen recently. Owned and run by Australian management, the casino caters primarily to Australian punters who will all know exactly what an Emu is (a large flightless bird related to the Ostrich), and offers a wide variety of games powered by the Microgaming Quickfire instant play system.
Software and Games
The Microgaming Quickfire system is an interesting beast. When we think of Microgaming casinos we generally think of a monolithic library of 500+ games installed via their Windows-only software. However Quickfire is a newer product that enables casinos to run a smaller selection of the newer (and generally better) Microgaming games, along with others from different developers such as Quickspin and Leander Gaming, all inside your browser window regardless of which operating system you are running.
The website is well designed and attractive, featuring grids of game logos that have become all the rage at web based casinos these days. Emu Casino goes one step further in providing lists that allow you to sort and filter the games by categories such as game type, developer, and common game themes. I was pleased to see that the casino, while Australian owned and themed, is restrained and resists the urge to plaster images of jingoistic, stereotypical Australiana all over the site. This is in stark contrast to most other "Aussie" themed casinos which are mostly run by Europeans or Americans who apparently seem to think that kangaroos regularly dodge great white sharks and crocodiles while surfing off Bondi with a VB in their pouch and the Sydney Opera House in the background.
Slot games, blackjack, video poker, roulette, scratch cards, and bingo are all offered by Emu Casino, with several titles under each category. The casino itself is able to boast more than 500 games, with new games added to the library each month. While I am generally happy and know exactly what to expect when it comes to Microgaming's Quickfire library of titles, it was interesting to see other lesser known developers' games such as MultiSlot and 1x2 Gaming on offer there. The casino has stated that it has plans to add Net Entertainment games in the near future too.
Most of the Microgaming progressive jackpots are available to win at Emu Casino. These jackpots are all networked between all casinos running Microgaming software, which means that the progressive pools grow quicker than if they were funded solely by one casino. There are some extraordinary jackpots on offer, including The Dark Knight / Mega Moolah jackpot which has been won before at over $5 million.
Bonuses and loyalty program
Emu Casino offers a fairly standard sign up bonus that is comparable to other Microgaming casinos. What we found more interesting though was the loyalty program that allows you to spend EmuPoints (comp points) in the site's EmuShop. As you play at the casino you accumulate EmuPoints that can be used to buy bonuses and free spins, swag like gifts and holidays, or just a straight out conversion to cash in your casino account.
Banking and service options
Banking options at Emu Casino are a little limited, although this should not cause problems for the mostly Australian clientele. The casino transacts in the usual currencies, US dollars, Pounds Sterling and Euros, along with Australian dollars. Deposits and withdrawals across the board carry no fees, which we found to be a positive difference from many other spots we review. Options for depositing and withdrawal of funds include Visa and Visa Debit cards, Mastercard, Moneybookers and Neteller, along with Diner's Club and Maestro for deposits only. Wire transfers are also available for those looking to withdraw larger amounts, although this can take up to 10 days to process.
Emu Casino offers live support via text chat, email or local Australian and New Zealand telephone numbers as part of their repertoire. Live chat is the perfect solution for those quick queries you may have that need an immediate answer, though I found that it does not operate 24 hours a day.
Security and transparency
On the security front, Emu Casino uses industry standard SSL encryption to safeguard your transactions and personal information. Identification documents are required to be verified before you make a withdrawal. An interesting thing that we have not seen at an online casino before is the use of two-factor mobile phone based authentication when signing up for an account. This requires you to verify that you signed up by entering a code sent to your mobile phone. This is great to see, although in our opinion it doesn't go far enough and we would like to see it also used when making a withdrawal on your account for example.
It should also be noted that Emu Casino has its payouts audited and published by eCOGRA each month. This sort of transparency is always a good sign that the casino is a reliable place to put your money. In addition we note that the casino stipulates in its terms that player funds are held separately from the casino's day to day operational funds, meaning that in theory player funds should be safe from any financial mismanagement of the casino.
Overall, Emu Casino represents a good choice for the Australian or Kiwi player. The game selection is great, the jackpots and loyalty program are appealing, and there are local support numbers to ring if you have a problem. It is clear that the operator of this casino understands the needs of Australian punters. Recommended.
