Software review and list of Real Time Gaming casinos. Last updated: September 24, 2013.
As one of the “old dogs” in the online gaming industry, Real Time Gaming (RTG) has survived and persevered while many other companies have flamed out. Founded in 1998, RTG’s success has been achieved due to a large gaming library and the ability to offer its platform to many operators throughout the globe.

RTG is seen in the gaming industry as a pioneer, even if some of its games are starting to show their age. The group was one of the first to offer system wide progressive jackpots and multi-player poker. Moves like these allowed Real Time Gaming to expand their platform to more customers while other suppliers played catch up. In more recent times its willingness to offer licenses to operators that continue to accept American players, unlike many of its competitors with a stronger offering, has enabled the software to flourish.
RTG offers dozens of both video and traditional reel slots. These games often times offer wild and scatter symbols, bonus rounds and free spins, and some of the newer games offer a feature guarantee meter, all of which gives punters the ability to win big prizes. The game themes have a good variety, but the overall quality of the titles is not nearly as high as what you would see from developers such as IGT, Net Entertainment, or Microgaming. Many of these games were released several years ago, and the same basic architecture from that period is still being used today. As a result, the overall look of the games is very similar, and you will not get nearly as immersive an experience with RTG's slots as its competitors. Still, there is a lot of fun to be had within these games, and they definitely warrant a few spins if you come across them. Some of the better games that have proved to be perennial favourites include Green Light, Paydirt, T-Rex, and Triple Twister.
There are a couple of negatives that we have come across in our time playing RTG slots. Players should be aware that it is possible to hit a win cap on some of the slot machines, which have a maximum win limit set to a multiple of the line bet size, and this typically comes into play during a free spins round when you hit a big win on a multiplier. In addition, we are not aware of any RTG casino that publishes any theoretical payout percentage figures, nor any audited monthly or annual payout numbers. We believe that the slot machines may be configured to one of three different payout rates corresponding roughly to 92.5%, 95% (the default), and 97.5%, however no RTG casino will ever tell you whether this is true, or what setting they are using if it is.
RTG offers a few networked progressive jackpots, with Jackpot Pinatas and Aztec's Millions offering the biggest two prizes. Compared to other software groups that offer networked progressives such as Net Entertainment or Microgaming, these games don't appear to be popular though, with the jackpots rising slowly, and they are rarely won. However a feature that players find enormously popular is the random progressive jackpot pools that operators are able to individually tailor to their casinos. For example some operators have a different progressive on almost every single game in the casino, while others have four or five pools that are contributed to by several games. Each of these jackpots may have major and minor pools, and every player has a chance of winning on every single spin as the jackpots are awarded randomly, with no relation to the paylines or symbols spun.
The table games offered by RTG are not its strongest point. The selection of games is not as extensive as say Microgaming or Playtech and we would even go so far as to say that they are beginning to show their age. On the positive side, the speed and fluidity with which they play is great and they are very playable, but it is safe to say that you won't be blown away by jaw-dropping eye candy or immersive sound effects. Games such as Blackjack, Pontoon, Three-Card Poker, Baccarat, Red Dog, and Pai Gow Poker are all present here.
RTG is particularly strong in the video poker department however, and it offers quite a variety of games that can be played in single or multiple hand variants, up to a maximum of 100 hands per deal. One thing to be aware of is that the operators have a choice of three different paytables when configuring their video poker machines, so it can pay for experienced video poker players to to shop around looking for the best paytable.
We would be remiss not to warn that players need to be very careful when choosing an RTG casino. The major reason for this is that the company appears willing to sell or license its software to just about anyone and then wash its hands of all responsibility for what the operator then does with it. This has led to the situation where RTG casinos have earned a notorious reputation amongst the playing community for being the go-to software choice of shady clip joints, rogue casinos, and outright rip-off merchants. Indeed, the top four groups of casinos on our rogue warnings and blacklist page, comprising more than 30 casinos of ill-repute, all operate using RTG software. Many of these casinos operate out of "rubber stamp" licensing jurisdictions such as Costa Rica where there is zero oversight of the casino's operations, and with the software provider taking no responsibility, players are at the mercy of the honesty of the casino operator in the event of a dispute. I am sure that you can guess how that often ends up.
Lest we sound like we have a total downer on all casinos using this software, we must be clear that there are good RTG casinos run by professional and honest operators. However it also must be said that these are a minority. Protect yourself and make sure you consult our review before playing at an RTG casino, and stick with the ones we rate 4 stars or higher.
RTG is a good, if not great, casino software. Its stability and variety of games is excellent, but the titles are definitely starting to show their age. Additionally, as Real Time Gaming licenses its software out to so many operators without any form of character assessment, and so many of the casinos are operated from jurisdictions where there is no accountability or oversight, there are more than a few rogue casinos that players would do well to steer clear of. The sight of the RTG brand on a casino should dictate caution and investigation rather than being a benchmark of a good casino, unlike the sight of a Microgaming or IGT license.
