TV Shows

23 replies • Last post

Hello CL Friends. My name is Hope777, and I am a TV (and movie) addict/fanatic. I am still trying to figure out a way to get paid to lay around and watch TV. lol

Anyway, I thought I would try to start a thread where we can talk about favorite TV shows, past and present, in case people are looking for something good to watch.

I am in a hurry right now, but I will be back to discuss MANY shows, believe me. lol I hope to not be talking to myself, so I hope you will all join me.

Quickly, right now I am finishing up Deadwood. This show is absolutely amazing! I am not one who is huge on Westerns, but it kept popping up in my reading and friends kept recommending, so I finally gave it a try. I am SO glad I did! The writing is amazing, staying true to the language of the time. I don't know how the actors can memorize such challenging lines/dialogue. This, alone, is impressive. SO many characters in the town of Deadwood and all great actors and actresses. I have many favorite characters.

Speaking of language, the language used on Deadwood will burn the ears of even the most desensitized, lol, but funny, too. I have had MANY LOL moments while watching Deadwood. My only regret is that the show only aired for three seasons

If you enjoy TV, I also want to tell you about my favorite TV blogger. (I wish I was him!). He provides much insight into each and every episode of many TV shows on regular and cable TV. He also interviews actors and show runners. I discovered him while watching The Wire, and I read his blog after every, single episode. He provided much insight in regard to things I may have missed and even the "inside story" on some of the shows and scenes.

His name is Alan Sepinwall and he is on the Hitfix website.

http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching

He is so popular that on his reviews of the Deadwood episodes (he only reviewed the first two seasons for some reason) at least two of the actors (Mr. Wu and Jim Beaver/Mr. Ellsworth) even joined in his many comments.

I will be back to blab more about TV shows, and I hope you will add your own, friends! 🙂

At the moment not too much. When it gets to be about summer time I am usually out and about.

When it is colder out though, I enjoy Criminal Minds, CSI, Big Bang Theory, Alaska State Troopers, and a few others I can't think of. There is a lot of good stuff out there.

Game of Thrones. No GoT episode this week. I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms already.

I still watch Criminal Minds. I don't know how I got out of the habit of CSI, but I used to watch. Dexter AND Breaking Bad start this summer, so I will have to save those for rainy days and nights, lol. Of course summer just will NOT arrive here, weatherwise, so we haven't even been able to get outdoors yet for any length of time.

This is one I have been thinking about, but I just don't know. My middle son and his girlfriend just started watching, and they like it a lot.

I have been hearing that for a long time, yet resisting adding ONE MORE show to my long list. lol I am sure someday I will break down and join the party OR be late to the party, lol

One of my very favorite characters from Deadwood, Richardson. I heard he was hired as an extra and did so well, they made him a re occurring character. He prays to the "antler" god. Long story, lol And he is just absolutely childlike and adorable.

Enjoy your time away, CL-Ed!

Ugh, one show I could not get into was Game of Thrones. I tried to get through the first episode, but it just wasn't my kind of show.... I am still trying to get through the original Lord of the Rings movies (I made it most of the way through the first one!), so maybe fantasy isn't my deal.

Have you ever been to the real Deadwood, Hope? It is a neat little gambling town nowadays. Very spiffy place to visit.

I have one show I need to watch is Hannibal. I have heard nothing but good things about it.

I have been to Deadwood, 'Slim, but I was like 10 years old! I still remember seeing Wild Bill Hickock's grave, but the town was pretty "dead" back then. I have heard that it is full of casinos now. One of the casino hotels was one that was built by Seth Bullock, the sheriff in the real Deadwood and in the show. He rebuilt after the fire, and it still stands today. Now that I have watched, and SO enjoyed the show, I want to go back! I have been to the Black Hills since, but we did not visit Deadwood that time around. Calamity Jane is SO awesome in the Deadwood show. The actress that plays her steals every scene she is in. I am still surprised by how much I enjoyed the show, since I am not huge on Westerns. it also made me interested enough to look up some of the history and real characters and learn more about them. Have you been there, recently, 'Slim?

Hannibal: YES! It is a very good show. Mads Mikkelsen plays a very creepy, effective Hannibal. He loves to cook "fine cuisine," of course, lol! Every show is named after something to do with culinary arts.

I like Hannibal a lot, but I have to say that I like Bates Motel even more. Both are really great shows. Bates Motel just ended the first season, and it is another I miss already.

I am not big on medieval times type shows, either, but neither is middle son, and he likes Game of Thrones. I will put it on my "someday" list and give it a whirl sometime, I am sure.

I got back from my holiday and caught up on the Game of Thrones episodes I missed while I was away. One of them features a scene known as the Red Wedding. I'm still in shock.

Yes, I have heard it referred to several times. Still, in the slight chance that I watch someday, I tried to not listen to anything else related to that except the title/phrase, red wedding." But I can about manage. Shock and awe.

What season are they on?

Welcome back CL-Ed.

Thanks to Hope's recommendation, I also watched Deadwood. I liked it so much that I ordered the series online and plan to watch it again. I missed the show when it was over. There are some disgusting scenes and lots of violence, but the characters are so well acted that I can definitely watch the whole series again.

I'm not really into westerns either, but this series had so much going on that it kept my interest.

I am now watching another series that Hope suggested which is Justified. I didn't think I would like it the first show, but each episode keeps getting better. I'm at the point now where I have to watch more than one episode at a time.

Two excellent shows that I am certainly glad I took the time to watch. I can't wait for Justified, Season Five!

I have been looking for a "new" series, and I tried two older series recently, but I I just could not get into either of them:
Breakout Kings
and
Burn Notice.

I don't know what all the fuss is about Burn Notice. Seems to be the same show over and over, and IMO the actors were not that likeable with one exception. Sharon Gless, of the old Cagney and Lacey days, plays the main characters' mom, and I really liked her. Other than that, the show did not do much for me.

Breakout Kings is basically the same thing: the same show over and over (it is on Netflix free to stream). My oldest son liked it enough. One of the main characters played Herc on The Wire, and it was fun to see him. Some of the characters were more likeable than those on Burn Notice, but the show is very episodic with little change in plot from episode to episode.

So these are two I would NOT recommend.

Finished Bates Motel a while back, and I already look forward to the next season of this prequel to the movie Psycho. Vera Farmiiga plays Norma Bates and both her sons are very good in their roles, too.

I just finished the series finale of Hannibal. I was a little disappointed in the finale, but I enjoyed the season, overall. They are starting where The Red Dragon (book) started, with changes for TV (for example, the reporter is male in the book and female in the series). Mads Mikkelsen plays a chilling Hannibal.

My son is trying to get me into The Sons of Anarchy on Netflix Free to Stream. I am through episode two and the jury is still out.

Finally, my son is also wanting me to watch the new show from Stephen King's Under the Dome on CBS. I am just starting to watch the first episode, and I will report back. Dean Norris from Breaking Bad plays a cop in this one, too.

And, yes, I missed my calling as a TV/movie critic, lol. I am still trying to find someone to pay me to watch TV for a living. lmbo!

Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal, would like you to join him for dinner. lol

I've gotten addicted to Taboo on Nat Geo. It skeeves me out so badly, but I can't stop watching. Last night they had a Yogi who drinks his own pee. 🤢

It is the best way I can get my wife to go to bed early so that I can play video games or do whatever I want.

Ewwww.....Lol, you are so bad, 'Slim! I have been into watching Hoarders on Netflix streaming when I am doing other things and want something on in the background. Some of those homes are just unbelievable. It makes me feel much better about myself and the condition of my bedroom. lol!

Definitely watch it. Its one of the best shows I have ever seen. They have just finished season 3 now. The thing is the author has two more books to go in the series that he hasn't finished writing yet. So he needs to get a move on otherwise the show will catch up with the books and then everyone will be left hanging. Judging by the way he treats his characters in the story it wouldn't be surprising if he did that just for laughs!

I just started really getting into Eastbound and Down. Its about an ex-MLB pitcher who is out of money and has to go back to his hometown to be a PE teacher.

It is funny as heck and I am really digging it. Definitely one of the funnier shows I've seen recently.

You are welcome! I truly missed my calling in this life, lol. I am a TV/movie junkie.

New made for Netflix show premiered last night at midnight. For those of you who do not know, these are like the show House of Cards with Kevin Spacey and The Fall with Julian Anderson where the show is made specifically for Netflix and they put an entire season up all at once: no waiting for the next episode!

The new one is called Orange is the New Black, about women in prison, by the creator of Weeds.

Another one coming soon on FX, I believe, is called The Bridge about a serial killer on the U.S./Mexican border. From what I understand it will be written in English AND Spanish to target the Hispanic audience. The review I heard on NPR yesterday sounded interesting.

This only sounds vaguely familiar. I will have to check it out sometime. I certainly love a good comedy. Laughter is the best............🙂
