Does anyone know anything about signed baseballs?

16 replies • Last post

I have a baseball that I found at a garage sale a year or two ago. It looks like it is signed, not stamped. I have narrowed it down to 1978 or 1979 Chicago White Sox. I've spent hours researching the names on the ball, and they match the signatures I've seen on other balls that are for sale. My question is, does anyone know if there were players there who were there in 1978, but not in 1979? I'm trying to narrow down the year of the ball. I can upload photos if necessary. The problem is too that I can't make out all of the names.

I would love to see a pic of that ball, LuckyMe!

What I would do is compare online rosters against the two seasons.

I have a couple of links that you can check out to see who was there and who wasn't.

Good luck!

Slim, I will have to take photos. I did take them before, but they are on my old computer. I did compare rosters yesterday, but the problem I'm having is I can't read all the signatures. I will try it again side by side and maybe that will work and I can narrow down the names. Thanks Slim.

Oh, I just noticed that the rosters are for the Chicago Cubs. This ball is for the Chicago White Sox.

Slim, I narrowed it down to a 1978 ball, because LaRussa is on it. Thanks for the links above. I will take a photo again and upload it.

That is awesome, I hope that my links helped. What are you planning on doing with it? Keeping it, eBaying it?

I will sell it. I want to do more research on it. It would be pretty embarrassing if I listed it and it turned out to be one of those stamped balls wouldn't it? lol I have no interest in baseball at all. How much do you think a ball like this would be worth Slim or do you have any expertise in that field?

LuckyMe, why don't you try the Antique Roadshow? I'm sure you can contact them online or their tool free number. Who knows you could be starring in one of their TV shows that has the highest appraisal..! 😉 🙂

I think I will upload pics here first, then if anyone thinks it's legit, I will find a local baseball dealer. The ball seems really light though so that has me concerned. Also if it was a team ball wouldn't it have a brand on it or something?

Okay, here are a couple of pics. Does this look like one of those stamped balls or do the signatures look real? Some of the signatures go int the red threads. The ball has no other markings on it. At first I thought they were real signatures, then I thought they were stamped, now I'm not sure.

This doesn't have anything to do with baseball, but I promised to show a photo of the stray cat that visits us. She is the sweetest cat, but bf is allergic to her, otherwise we would keep her in while it's cold.

Awwww....she IS so sweet. Maybe you could find free advertising and find her a good home? She looks worth it. 🙂

Thanks for sharing the photo.

I'm no expert on baseball autographs but to me the ball looks stamped. I don't know if it is the ink color or what, but it kinda looks suspect. I would still get it looked at though because if it is real it could be worth some dough!

Thanks Slim, I'm not sure either. People on another forum said they think it's stamped. I will hang on to it until I can have it checked. If it's stamped then I guess it will be a dog toy, but have to get a dog first. 🙂

This is somewhat unrelated, but I found it interesting:

Thanks Hope. I will check it out more when I have the time. There were a couple of tips in the article that I haven't tried yet. I only paid $3 for the ball, so if it's a stamped ball, I am not upset. I didn't buy it thinking it was real.

The other video, wow. Are there any honest people left in the world? I would never dream of forging something (not like I have the expertise anyway) like that. How do people live with themselves? Glad that guy is outing the forgeries.
