Never-ending trivia

We're going to play a bit of a game in this thread - I start off by asking a trivia question and you try to answer it. If you get the answer right, you then ask the next question.

The only rule is this: don't ask a new question until the current one has been answered.

So here we go, first question. If you know the answer just post it then ask the next question. If you aren't sure you have the right answer just wait until I or someone else confirms it!

In which film does Bruce Lee fight Jackie Chan?

I read that the story may well be apocryphal but its the most common explanation.

I only remember one of the stories. I had this on the tip of my tongue, and it was driving me crazy, and I don't want to cheat, so I was talking this through with my son tonight, on the way to his comedy show. I may not have enough details, because I don't remember who said this, but....didn't someone say that the statue looked like her Uncle Oscar or something like that? That is all I remember. 😜

I'll pay that. Apparently the Academy librarian said "it looks like my uncle Oscar".

Thank you! I thought is was some actress. I wonder if they called the statue anything else before calling it Oscar? I will have to look it up now, because you have me curious. Like I said, my brother was the trivia king of the academy awards, going way back, and he had tons of books about them, too.

Now I have to think of something, lol! I always stress about thinking of something that is not too difficult or too easy.

I am going to stay on the subject of the Academy Awards.

Although others were honored before him in different categories of the Academy Awards, who was the first black actor to win an Oscar for Best Actor in 1963? (Still one of my all-time favorite actors).

Bonus points for knowing which black actor, or actress, was the first EVER to receive an Academy Award and for what movie?

Well, that was quick, lol!

*Hattie McDaniel was the first black person, ever, to win an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1940. McDanial won for her role as "Mammy" in Gone with the Wind.

Knew the first was from Gone with the Wind but wouldn't have been able to remember her name without looking it up or just reading the back of the dvd case I guess 🙂

Scales, bones, fin rays and otoliths have all been used to determine the age of fish, since these and other bony parts of fish often form yearly rings (annuli) like those of a tree. that's what I know. Ubetcha, I think you're right.

LOL, well maybe someone should look it up and tell us the answer? Also, LM is out of town for a bit, so we will still have to wait. In the meantime, let's find the origin to the word Trivia, because now you have me curious, Ubetcha! 🙂

I'm going to push it along so I've looked it up. The word has latin origins meaning "a place where three ways meet" but its first usage in its modern interpretation was in 1965 in a Columbia Daily Spectator newspaper column.

Here is the most common explanation:

The following explanation of the origin of the hand salute is perhaps closest to the truth: It was a long-established military custom for juniors to remove their headgear in the presence of superiors. In the British Army as late as the American Revolution a soldier saluted bv removing his hat. But with the advent of more cumbersome headgear in the 18th and 19th centuries, the act of removing one’s hat was gradually converted into the simpler gesture of grasping the visor, and issuing a courteous salutation. From there it finally became conventionalized into something resembling our modern hand salute.

Is this what you came up with, CL-Ed?

The above information is taken from the following link, where you can also read a little more about it, if interested.

http://www.qmmuseum.lee.army.mil/history/vignettes/respect1.html

I will post a new question when I return home tomorrow. Out of town, and I just stopped in for a minute. 🙂

Okay. This one is in the "Arts and Entertainment" category, for all you movie buffs out there. 🙂

What Francis Ford Coppola movie sees Marlon Brando blather: "Horror has a face, and you must make a friend of horror"?

Actually I had read that the salute goes all the way back to medieval times when knights had to lift their helmet visors to show their faces to the king.

Coppola and Brando... it would have to be The Godfather or Apocalypse Now? I'll go with the Godfather.
